⚖️ Penalty settings and management

Find where each penalty rule is actually configured, what the four clan rules do by default, and how to correct or remove a penalty that has already been applied.

Advanced Features 7 min read Reference Updated 21 Aug 2026

You either want to change how your clan penalises, or you have a penalty in front of you that needs correcting. Those are two different pages, and neither of them is called "Penalty Settings" in the menu.

⚠️
There is no Penalty Settings menu item
Configuration is a card inside Clan Management → Clan Settings, called ⚖️ Penalty System. Reviewing, correcting and removing penalties happens somewhere else entirely: Clan Management → Penalties Applied, which opens headed Applied Penalties. If you have been hunting the menu for a penalty page, that is why you cannot find it.

A new clan penalises nobody
All four clan-wide rules are off in a freshly created clan, the crypt rule included, and every value starts at 0 with no chest chosen. Nothing is penalising your members until you go and switch a rule on yourself. If you assumed crypt penalties were already running, they are not — check the ⚖️ Penalty System card before your next cycle closes.

Nothing works until you have penalty chests

Every rule asks you to pick a penalty chest, and that dropdown is filled only from chests in your own catalog that carry the Mark as penalty chest switch. With no penalty chests, every dropdown is empty and no penalty can be written at all, whatever the toggles say.

Make one chest per rule and name it after the rule, so the reason is readable later on a member's record.

💡
The chest's own point value is ignored
The amount always comes from the rule's Penalty Value field, or from the calculated shortfall. Setting the catalog chest to −500 and leaving the rule at 0 produces penalties worth nothing.

The four clan rules

All four are in one slide-over. The card header counts how many are switched on, and the same figure appears as Penalty Rules in the tiles at the top of Clan Settings. In a clan nobody has configured yet, that count reads 0.

Every rule also has its own Penalty Chest field. Values are typed as positive numbers and applied as negatives.

⚠️
A rule on with its value at 0 is not harmless
Three of the four rules will happily write penalty records worth zero points: they notify the member, inflate the penalty counts on every statistics screen, and pull down the member's penalty score on the insights page. Only the crypt rule refuses to write a zero. If you switch a rule on, give it an amount in the same visit.
⚠️
One summary line to distrust
The Gold Pass line on the ⚖️ Penalty System card always reads "On crypt close", even for clans set to the monthly day. Open the slide-over to see which mode you are actually on.

Event penalties are not here

An event's point, chest and chat penalties — and its grace period — live on the event, and they all start at 0. Nothing you set in Clan Settings affects them.

The other penalty page, and why to avoid it

⚠️
Two pages that do almost the same thing
An older Penalties: Settings page still exists. It is no longer in the menu, but a bookmark will still reach it. It covers only three of the four rules — the Gold Pass rule exists nowhere but the Clan Settings slide-over — and it splits the crypt rule across two rows. Worse, the two pages disagree about what "off" means: switching a rule off on the old page also clears that rule's penalty chest and zeroes its value, while the slide-over leaves both alone. Agree with your fellow admins to use Clan Settings and nothing else, or two people doing "the same thing" will leave the clan in two different states.

Reviewing what has been applied

Clan Management → Penalties Applied opens on the current chest cycle, with arrows to step backwards and forwards through cycles. You can also switch the period to This Month, Last Month or Custom — a custom range is capped at 90 days, and a longer or reversed range shows a warning and loads nothing.

Clicking a member opens a panel with their totals, a breakdown per penalty type, every penalty in the period, and a Penalty History — Last 5 Chest Cycles strip that makes a pattern obvious at a glance.

What you may change

Members only ever see active penalties, never deleted ones.

You are set up correctly when
The ⚖️ Penalty System card shows the number of active rules you intended — remember that a clan nobody has touched shows 0, so if you meant to run crypt penalties, that card must not read 0 — and every active rule's summary line names a real chest instead of a dash and an amount above zero. A rule showing "Chest: —" is switched on and doing nothing.

Four things you cannot do

For the full picture — what sets each rule off, which cycle the result lands in, every way to exempt a member, and what re-opening a cycle rolls back — read the guide Understand the penalty system.

Common questions

I switched a penalty rule on and nothing has happened. Why?

Work through these four in order.

  1. No penalty chest chosen. The rule cannot write anything without one. Its summary line on the Penalty System card will read "Chest: —".
  2. No penalty chests exist yet. Create one in your Chest Catalog with Mark as penalty chest switched on.
  3. Nothing has triggered it yet. The crypt, login and no-user rules only run when a chest cycle is closed.
  4. The members are exempt. Check their player pages for No Penalties or No Crypt Penalties.

Can I give a member a penalty manually?

No. There is no way to create a penalty from the interface — not on Penalties Applied, not on a player page, nowhere. Every penalty is produced by an automatic rule.

What an admin can do is remove one, restore one they removed, or correct its points and date.

A member was penalised in a cycle where they hit their target. Is that wrong?

Usually not. A penalty produced when a cycle closes is written into the next cycle, dated just after it begins. So it sits at the top of a cycle it does not belong to.

Check the date on the record: if it is within minutes of the cycle start, it belongs to the cycle before.

Where do I change the penalties for a single event?

On the event, not in Clan Settings. Open Clan Management → Events and edit the event itself. Its point penalty, chest penalty, chat penalty and grace period all default to 0, and new events inherit whatever defaults you have set for that event type.

One trap worth knowing: the chest penalty is multiplied by how many chests the member was short, while the point and chat penalties are not.
